Administration Guide

7. Using the Library

All the required reading for this course is contained in the textbook (plus the Study Guide of course).

I have resisted suggesting any extra reading, though there are lists of such in Sober. So, NO reading of any material other than what can be found in Sober - the Lectures and the Readings - is compulsory. Read that sentence again and be joyful! This is not dumbing down the course. We would much prefer you to read and think about the material you have already, rather than read a whole heap of extra stuff. In studying philosophy it is not as important to read masses of material as it may be in other subjects. Instead, it is much more important that you spend longer thinking through each item that you do read than that you read more and more widely.

For extramurals, if you want to obtain copies of extra material despite all the above warnings-off, then contact the Extramural Library Service at Massey. Note that most local public libraries tend not to be very good sources for philosophy. They usually contain a rather quirky collection of materials-better not to go browsing around their philosophy sections at all! University Libraries are good. At all of them you will be able to read books in the library itself, and at some you may be granted borrowing rights for a fee (inquire).
