Iron oxide is the oxidising agent used in thermite. When a more reactive metal is mixed with iron oxide and ignited, it produces a huge exothermic displacement reaction, enough to melt the pure iron formed!. Iron oxide is also used as a catalyst in some solid rock propellants.
