What's the difference?
Well they are actually the same thing really they just have different categories and species.
A Primate is any member of the Mammalian family. There are two different divisions of primates.
These are the Prosimians, which include the Loris the Tree Shrew, and the Lemur.
The second variety are what's known as the Anthropoids, this includes Monkeys, Apes, and yes that's right even us, Humans.
Apes don't have tails, the ape family
consist of the gorilla, chimpanzee, Orang-utan,
Gibbon and the Tasia. Gibbons are
also related to apes, though are classed as lesser apes.
The ape family tend to have mainly vegetarian diet, besides the gorilla and chimpanzees who on occasion eat small animals.
Apes are larger in size than most monkey's and have a more developed brain than a monkey.
Many of the ape family have similarities in their physical behavior, such as using the branches of trees to swing from. And also have increased levels of intelligence. These animals may not look it, but they are in fact are very intelligent and have, in the past been given a bad reputation by media and sometimes even the scientific community.
Gorilla
Largest of all the ape family, they tend to communicate with grunting noises rather than squeals or chatter. Gorillas live in groups, each group has a leader.
The silver back (named that because of the silver hair down his back) is the leader of his group and makes the decisions as to where his group will go and where they will settle.
Gorillas are only aggressive when they feel threatened, much of their aggressive reputation has been created by the media with films such as King Kong.
Gorillas like many other primates,
share a full range of emotions with us. They feel happiness, sadness,
anger, fear, shame, love, they can also get upset and even cry. This was
witnessed by famous gorilla researcher
Dian Fossey. While nursing an
orphaned gorilla she found that it shed tears just like a human, this was the
first time she had ever witnessed that and was the only time. They
beat their chest making a Pok, pok, pok sound to relieve tension a bit like us
scratching our head or yawning.
Gorillas rarely ever harm people, they do put on one of the most, if not the most terrifying display of aggression to ward of any possible intruders . They will beat their chest making a pok, pok, pok noise and rip large pieces of plantation out of the ground while slamming their fist onto the ground at the same time. Terrifying but only bluff, they usually stop charging at the object that has drawn their attention unless they really mean the object any harm.
Gorillas tend to be shy and hide in the leaves and forestry. They are also one of the most hunted species of ape and are at very high risk of being harmed by poachers and having their offspring kidnapped for sale on the black market, or even used as food.
Gorillas, like other species of
primate, have the ability to learn
sign language. One famous gorilla is Koko, she was taught sign language
by Penny Patterson who was a PhD student at Stanford University when she
started working with Koko. Koko has learnt many words, in fact I believe
the number is around 600.
Gorillas diets consist of mainly fruits and vegetables, such as wild celery, bedstraw, bamboo shoots, thistles, brambles and nettles. They get most of the liquid they need from the plants they eat, they don't tend to drink the same way as they eat. It is estimated by researchers that a male gorilla will eat as much as 60Lbs of vegatable and plant matter every day.

Chimpanzees live in largest groups compared to other primates, sometimes up to around 100 individual chimpanzees may be taking part in their social group. Much like the gorilla, the chimpanzees also tend to have their groups lead by an important male member. Chimpanzees stay close to their mothers throughout their lives and often do not know who their father is, their mother is the one who takes a very important role in their lives. Their groups often contain uncles, aunts, cousins, and many, many more.
Bonobos ( a pygmy species of chimpanzee) in their infancy they have a mental ability equivalent to a human child of similar age. They understand language like a human does.
Bonobos live in large loose groups, which are split up into groups of about 15 when foraging for food.
Angry chimpanzees clamp their lips shut, when they show their bottom teeth only it means they want to play, both upper and lower teeth is said to be a sign of anger and aggression.
The dominant chimpanzee in a group will scream and carry on and throw branches and make his hair stand up on end to show his power.
To avoid a fight with an important chimpanzee the less dominant ones lower themselves into a crouching position and rock back and forth and up and down towards the dominant one while their hair is laid down as flat as possible.
Male chimpanzees often hug, cuddle and kiss as well as pat each other on the back as a sign of friendship. This is not done with the females though they still form strong friendships as well. The females groom each other as well as the males, this is a sign of friendship and helps to build strong bonds of friendship with each other.
Chimpanzee's can make more than 50 sounds, when they are happy they make hooting noises, when they are excited they scream.
There was a famous chimpanzee by the name of Washoe who learnt over 150 word in sign language and then was able to teach it to others. He got sick of being told to perform signing on command all the time though. He began to find he didn't fit into his own peer group very well, he became quite unhappy. Researchers did manage to communicate with chimps using signing and due to this have found chimpanzee's see the world in much the same way us humans do. They feel love, hate, and even fear death. This shows how intelligent these animals are, but also shows how they really are best suited to their own environment.
